5 Women-Owned Beauty Brands That Are Changing the Industry
Over the last 50 years or so, women have been making giant strides and taking charge in many different industries. Women are now in higher seats and making all of the big decisions. The Beauty Industry has changed tremendously over the last few years due to women taking control over what goes on their skin. More of the brands are using better ingredients and adding more diversity to their products. March is Women’s History Month and I want to celebrate some of my favorite Women-Owned Beauty Industry Brands. These women have changed the beauty industry by providing products that look good on everyone. They either have or are making their way to cementing their names in the beauty industry. AND they all just happen to be Black Women.
Pat McGrath is one of the biggest names in the Makeup Industry and is arguably one of the best makeup artists World. Pat McGrath is a Self-Made Millionaire who worked her way from a receptionist at a magazine. She is known for her out-of-this-world makeup looks on celebrities and her amazing makeup line, Pat McGrath Labs which includes one of the hottest items in the Makeup Industry, The Mothership Eye Pallet.
After fighting and kicking Breast Cancer’s butt, Cashmere Nicole founded Beauty Bakerie in 2011 when she became more health-conscious about the makeup and products we put on our skin. Now Beauty Bakerie is in 1000 stores across the globe. The line features items with cute bakery-themed products, such as Flour Setting Powder, Matte Lip Whip, and InstaBake Foundation & Concealer to name a few. She also founded “Sugar Homes” in 2016 which supports the needs of orphaned children worldwide. It doesn’t get more Girl Boss than that…
Meaning Beautiful in African, UOMA was founded by Nigerian-born Sharon Chuter. A former Beauty Exec., Chuter created the brand to redefine inclusion by using her heritage to inspire bright and modern products. UOMA is full of eye-catching colors for any and everyone. They have everything from daring lip colors to bold lashes.
It is a very common misconception that Black people don’t need or wear sunscreen, but we also need to protect our skin. However, most sunscreen leaves a white cast on darker skin. So Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen formulated for women of color that dries down without a white cast. The brand started with just regular sunscreen, but it has grown to mattifying sunscreen, lip gloss, body spray, and Sunscreen for Kids. They also have Apparel and Accessories available for purchase
Last but definitely not least, We have to talk about what Rhianna has done with Fenty Beauty. One of the #1 problems with the makeup industry as a whole is that most brands don’t have a wide variety of color options for everyone. Rhianna released her line with pretty much every skin color. Not only is the Fenty Makeup Line all about inclusion but even the lingerie line SAVAGE Fenty has sizes to fit more people than your average line, with sizes going up to a 4x for men and women. She has made Fenty Beauty into a Billion-dollar Brand and she is worth over $600 million herself!
These are only a few of the many Black women-owned Brands that have made a big name for themselves by changing the Beauty Industry. And there are even more women who have made strides in the treatment of women period. Let’s celebrate those who are working hard to make sure future female leaders always have a seat at the table.
